Your Comedy Profile

published by verb on Wed, 12/21/2005 - 3:36pm

So a friend and I were talking about the stuff that really amuses us, and we broke them down into a couple of categories. For him:

  1. Things hauling ass
  2. People getting hit in the face
  3. Elaborate wordplay
  4. Unexpected and inexplicable violence or profanity

What about you? What classes of humor push YOUR buttons?

It would be easier to tell

It would be easier to tell you what I don't find funny, but I can tell you that I fine "poo" a lot funnier than most people.

Juxtapositions

Permalink Submitted by Ajax on Wed, 12/21/2005 - 9:09pm.

For me, the essence of humor is a juxtaposition of the fantastic with the quotidian:

  • Sometimes we examine a quotidian situation with a fantastic twist, a la the old Mad TV sketch where a fast food manager requires two of his employees to fight a duel to the death to determine which will receive a promotion.
  • Other times, we imagine a quotidian aspect of a fantastic situation. Such as an Op-Ed piece full of thees and thous which dwells on the serious fiscal crisis facing the kingdom if we continue offering generous Social Security benefits to elves. Or an alien empire offering a declaration of total war against humanity in order to avoid paying $1,600 in late fees to Blockbuster for losing a copy of Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo.

Anything along those lines will reliably crack me up if done well. Slapstick and/or pointless vulgarity might get a snort of surprise, but that's about it.

A couple things

Permalink Submitted by misskaz on Thu, 12/22/2005 - 8:41am.

1. Stuff blowing up (you know, like that episode of Mythbusters where they blow up an entire cement truck).

2. My dog and/or cat being goofy, which is pretty much all the time, especially for the dog. I think that's one of the biggest gifts they give me - several full-on belly laughs a day.
