Lights... Camera... Fantasy!

published by Osomatic on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 6:01am

Ah, Hollywood! City of dreams, fame, stars, and giant payoffs!

Don't you wish you could grab a piece of that action? Well, you can't. But you can pretend to, in the new game Fantasy Moguls, in which you are a studio head, deciding which movies to release.

Six doughty Predicators are competing in this first box office brawl, the Holiday Blockbuster season (November 1 2006 - January 31 2007). With most of the teams on the board, it seemed time to report the results so far:

First in the draft (and I swear it was random) was, well, your commissioner, me. Osomatic. Oso Films.

So far, it's looking like "Borat" was a great choice for Oso Films. Sasha Baron Cohen's movie has managed to gain the top spot for the past two weeks and still looks like a solid earner for the next several weeks to come, if not a blockbuster. But Oso Films is depending on a the new James Bond to perform in "Casino Royale" - always a dicey, no pun intended, proposition. Borat will not be enough to keep Oso in the running should the new Bond fail, but shoot-'em-up film "Blood Diamond" and kid favorite "Arthur and the Invisibles" may keep Oso Films afloat

Next up is MandaMax, run by MandaX. Hollywood legend has it that this take-no-prisoners studio head once, in what can only be called poetic justic, threw an ashtray at Scott Rudin's head.

MandaX is counting heavily on the blockbuster potential of the Ben Stiller family comedy "A Night At The Museum," as well as the animated comedies "Happy Feet" and Will Smith vehicle "The Pursuit of Happyness." MandaMax may also get an unexpected boost from the Christians with "The Nativity Story."

PlasticJesus heads up Ari Fucking Gold's Movie Extravaganza.

Mr. Jesus-Gold is not yet on the board with a movie, but don't count him out just yet - he'll be releasing the Denzel Washington starrer Deja Vu, almost guaranteed to be a hit if not a blockbuster, and to further burst upon the box-office scene with "Charlotte's Web," which features the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, John Cleese, and Steve Buscemi. If Oprah commands her viewers to see the film, Mr. Jesus-Gold will be sitting pretty. Possible sleepers include "The Good German," starring George Clooney, and a Chow Yun-Fat martial arts flick, "Curse of the Golden Flower," which may become the next "Hidden Tiger, Sleeping Box-Office."

Vivid Miah Video, helmed by Letsgomiah, is already making the best of its holiday slate.

"Santa Clause 3" (yes really) has already raked in 41 million for Miah, and will probably continue to be an earner, if not a huge one, for VMV throughout the holiday season. Animated release "Flushed Away" has also put up solid box-office numbers as well, taking in just shy of 40 million dollars. However, the Russel Crowe boring-ass love story "A Good Year" is so far failing to perform, at only 3 million in the box office, leaving Miah hoping that horror pic Hostel 2 can keep him in the lead until the end of January.

byrne's Moment of Inertia Productions is still trying to gain kinetic energy.

"Stranger Than Fiction" has made 13 million dollars, a strong opening for what is almost essentially an independent movie. But Moment of Inertia is still in the uncomfortable position of hoping that "Deck The Halls," "Let's Go To Prison," and "Dreamgirls" do well. If they do, or if the Rocky Balboa biopic "Rocky Balboa" is an underdog that wins, Moment of Inertia Productions could be a contender.

And finally in the draft, but not coming out nearly as badly as you'd think, is Stankow's Cecil B. DeStankow.

Cecil B. DeStankow already scored a surprising hit with "Saw 2," which has taken in 70 million dollars so far; but has suffered a small defeat with small flick "Babel," which despite the star power of Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett has only earned 7.4 million to date. Still, Cecil B. is looking forward to the releases of "Eragon" which could be this year's "Lord of the Rings;" as well as "Apocolypto," which maybe a whole lot of anti-semites will go to see to support Mel Gibson. Or something.

So we're just barely gettin' started here, folks. It ought to be interesting. And next season it will hopefully get more interesting still, as your commissioner will add in other points-gaining variables such as review scores, weeks spent in the top ten, per-theater average, and others. Woo!

For now, early in the season, here is where we stand:

Nice writeup - sounds like this should be an interesting game to watch.
