I'd be interested...
But whether or not I can afford it sort of depends on when it is.
Ditto
Las Vegas is a $$ sink.
You don't *have* to gamble.
You don't *have* to gamble. Cheap flights and hotel rooms are available.
Gambling aside
Yes, but cheap flights and hotel rooms are available everywhere.
Vegas has to be one of the most unpredictable cities in the nation for pricing. Hotel and flight availability and prices dip and bob crazily as huge conventions, expos, etc. roll through town. Even if we do select a date in the far future, how do we know we're not butting up against Ace 1 Super Expo Bonanza and have to deal with 60,000 convention goers snapping up flights and hotels?
It is busy in Vegas in winter because snowbirds flock to a place that actually has sunshine. It is busy in Vegas in summer (and fucking hot) because bachelor/ette parties swing through town like clockwork. It is busy in spring and fall because it's high convention season. There is no "off-peak" in Vegas anymore.
Additionally, there are indeed "budget options" for lodging, but they're not located on the strip -- rather they're downtown in the old city or off-strip completely, necessitating cab rides ($$$), etc. I fear a bar is being set that people with tight budgets cannot reach.
These are some of the reasons I voted no. I know it will be all but impossible to find a place that everyone will be happy with. But hey, if the idea is to be together, let's pick a city where we don't have to worry about the associated crap so much. Some place less tourist-crazy, like Denver (everyone flies to Denver now) or, god help us, Indianapolis.
Just my two lincolns.
Well...
I don't know for sure that the goal is to be together the whole time. I thought it was to meet up in a place where we can all have fun. There's no way in hell that if we have more than about 4 people that we'll all be together the whole time. We can all do our own things and then get together for dinners, or other specified events.
Yes, downtown is where the budget hotels are. As it turns out, there's a lot of cheap food and drinks around there too (along with good food and drinks too). And frankly, even if you're on the strip you're probably going to end up taking some cabs. Everything is far away, even the next casino over. And hey, there's no reason one of us LA predicators couldn't rent a van and drive it there, so that we could all do a trip to Hoover Dam or something.
There's no off-peak, this is true. But that means that there are almost always travel deals. As long as we avoid the really huge events like CES we'll be fine.
Yes, because standing around
Yes, because standing around watching other people gamble is sooooo much fun. Don't tell me you're all gonna stay away from the blackjack tables just because one or two people can't afford to play.
And everything else there is expensive too - food, entertainment, drinks - even if you exclude gambling.
I'd be all for Vegas...
.. assuming that the date to be determined fell post-nuclear apocalypse which left Las Vegas (ironically) as the sole surviving outpost of civilization in North America.
Otherwise, I can think of a number of places I'd prefer. Like, say, Branson (which at least has the virtue of being centrally located).
Why on earth would I stand
Why on earth would I stand around watching somebody else gamble? In a group this big, we're going to need split-up time so that people can go do whatever they feel like.
Anyway, it's just you and Miah making with the complaints, I think you've got a Chicago Cabal going on here. And don't worry, we will have a Chicago meetup at some point. But let's have a Vegas one too!
Please note that I was just
Please note that I was just teasing about the "complaints."
This has nothing to do with
This has nothing to do with Chicago.
I don't need an excuse to travel. I don't need an excuse to go to Vegas. If I attend a predicate meetup, it's precisely because I want to hang out with you guys. Sure it wouldn't be very second of every day, but I would want the major events to be with you guys.
I was kidding about Chicago
I was kidding about Chicago too, although I do think that at some point there *should* be a Chicago meetup.
I just don't think that with such a large group, that we'd all be able to agree on what to do for the majority of each day, no matter *where* we are. Even in LA, we only had two events during the course of the entire weekend.
I would think that Vegas, given the large number of things to do, would make a similarly good meeting place.
For instance, perhaps one of us LA people (who get the benefit of an easy trip) could rent a big van. I'd volunteer to do that. Then we could all pile in one day and go to Hoover Dam, go have lunch and drinks, hit the Liberace Museum, and then split up until dinner time.
Or whatever. Point is, I think Vegas has so much to do that we can plan plenty of "together" events, as well as stuff to do that we don't all have to agree on.
Omg
A Liberace Museum.
sure
i dont see why not, vegas is only 9 hrs away from me, and thats if i drive slow.
I'd say that right now,
I'd say that right now, Vegas isn't good for me for both reasons of money and lack of anyone to take the small child for a few days. I won't rule it out completely, since things may change (god knows my husband has been knocking himself out trying to change them) but it's still doubtful. Chicago might be do-able at some point, since I will likely come around anyway to introduce the boy to my relatives out there. Miah suggested Denver, which would of course be very easy for me, but maybe not a whole lot of fun for everyone else.
