Can, In Fact, Stop The Music

published by Ajax on Wed, 03/21/2007 - 2:00pm

Way back...oh, let's call it fifteen years ago, now, I was dating and living with a fantastic, gorgeous, and brilliant woman who shared a ton of interests with me and whom I adored beyond measure. Both of us were musical people, and one of her obsessions was Led Zeppelin. I liked Zep OK, but under her influence I became much more thoroughly indoctrinated to and familiar with their catalog.

Later, of course, we broke up. And although ordinarily I tend to be a musical purist, who appreciates music in and of itself rather than because of associations with past experience, for a good long while afterward it was simply too painful to listen to Zeppelin because it reminded me so powerfully of what I'd lost. (I eventually recovered, and am now back to liking them OK. And liking the girl OK, too; she's on my LJ friends list as a matter of fact.)

Have you ever had music "stolen" from you in this way? What, and why, and did you ever get over it?

Mazzy Star

Permalink Submitted by misskaz on Wed, 03/21/2007 - 2:51pm.

I never cared *all* that much about Mazzy Star. But I did find them interesting back in the late 90s/early 00s. Then, in a moment, it was ruined for me. How? My then boyfriend told me that he used to have sex with his former girlfriend with Mazzy Star playing in the background and it was such a strong connection to him that hearing it made him aroused.

Um, WTF.

So yeah, any budding interest in the band was completely and totally shot down at that point, because whenever I heard it I thought about my boyfriend having sex with his ex. I've never cared enough about the band to try to recover; even though it turned out that guy was a doofus and didn't know a good thing (me) when he had it.

U2 grated on me after my U2-obsessed girlfriend dumped me. Nothing really spectacular though.

I wonder if my other ex-gf (the one I dumped) found herself no longer able to listen to Bad English after I broke up with her. If so, I did her a favor (on multiple levels).[1]

[1] She was the one who chose some Bad English song as "our" song. This was a symptom of a larger set of problems in that relationship.
